What I Did Over Christmas Vacation

Filed under: Random — missedmanners @ 5:44 pm

No manners berating today, folks.

No me saying, “Do this, not that,” or “Don’t stick that there, stick it here,” etc.

Nope.

I just wanted to share with you guys what I did over Christmas vacation. That’s it.

I get a real swelling of pride whenever I show anyone these pictures. It’s a warm fuzzy feeling, mixed with a little bit of dorky shame.

This past Christmas Vacation my brothers, sister, myself and my girlfriend built a scale replica of the battle of Helms Deep, from the second book of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Two Towers penned by the late, great, J.R.R. Tolkien. Here are some pictures:

out-view.jpg
This is the zoomed out view. The whole thing was constructed out of cardboard, glue, icing and… well, candy. It clocked in at about 7 feet long by 3 feet deep by 2 feet tall. We used over 500 Gummy Bears as orcs and Uruk-Hai. The Elves, Dwarves and Men were represented by sour patch kids. Most of these were of course corpses.

a-view-of-desperation.jpg

This is the reverse view. As you can see, my mom has a bitching rug. Also you can see that by this point the evil army of Saruman’s creation has broken through the wall and is streaming in for the sweet sweet sugary kill.

scaling.jpg

We made some siege machinery as well. The Catapults were Tootsie pops. Leaning against the Jolly Rancher wall is a siege tower made of other tootsie type stuff. There are some red licorice ropes as, well… rope.

the-walls-are-down.jpg

Here you can see how skilled we are at cardboard mountain creation. Seeing this again almost makes me aroused at my own awesomeness. Notice the brutal carnage happening on the walls as the men and orcs battle.

the-slaughter.jpg

Alas! The evil host is through the walls! And up the carefully crafted stairs of Starburst candies. Is there no end to their cruelty? The answer is most definitely NO, as you can see from the piles of dead men and elves. They are covered in the sweetest candy blood we could find (red Nerds and more licorice rope).

ride-forth.jpg

One last charge for glory. Theoden and Aragorn charge forth from the castle atop mighty steeds (gummy Target dogs), with mighty spears (toothpicks, not actually candy), into the teeming multitude of evil. I’m pretty sure they’re doing it for wrath and ruin, or something.

the-keep2.jpg

This is the hold. My girlfriend, Eileen, did most of this and you can tell because it’s super bad ass. Notice the Nerd graveled path and the brickwork. This shot is dramatic in that last scene from Saving Private Ryan everyone is getting shot and dying sort of way. You’re terrified, but you feel for the characters, even though they are only sugar.

the-scene.jpg

And finally, just like he said he would, Gandalf comes to the rescue. If you look closely you can see him with a wizard’s staff just wrecking shit in the middle of orcs who are getting fucking pwnt. Pwnt is Ent-speak for owned.

So there you have it. Next year we’re building Minas Tirith, all seven rings.

What did you do over the break?

Haha, I really don’t care because there is NO way it was even close to as cool as this.

  2. That is completely amazing. The tootsie-pop catapults are particularly inspired. I’m glad you took the close-up photos, which bring us directly into the pent-up emotions of the chaotic moment. You are, of course, going to send these to Peter Jackson (and Kevin Smith), right? Your entire creative team will probably get cameos as Bagginses in “The Hobbit.”

  11. even though this was only accurate to the movies and not the true, written versions (there were NO elven armies at the battle of helm’s deep, only men, gimli, legolas, and gandalf and the ents at the end), i gotta admit it’s still pretty pimp. next time, just use icing and then you can eat the entire thing when you’re done!!!! the sugar rush can help you build more stuff!

  14. and people make fun of me cause i make chainmaille…..granted it’s not edible, but after a week, neither was this.

i honestly don’t know what to say. it’s quite the accomplishment to be sure, but…why? at least when i make something, it’s got some functional use, or artistic merit (read monetary value). what inspires someone to make something of this scale? isn’t a gingerbread house enough? our gingerbread house (which there are no photos of, thanks alot kodak) featured a tank busting through the front door and swat members storming the house from every angle.

  24. I am bemused, nevertheless I acknowledge the skill and innocent-fun attitude of the endeavour and the humour of the post. I look forward to the time when (1) nobody eats candy and dentists are far less busy and (2) when Western Capitalism & Democracy prevails so that, consequently, nobody is hungry and everyone can waste food and not feel guilty. Or was the glue edible too? And is this a tradition that involves rushing the whole lot down to the poor quarter for the ragged urchins to eat and ruin their previously healthy teeth? Or am I a nasty killjoy? Cy Quick at mydigest.wordpress.com

  29. art is not about purpose, it’s about ART. This definitely qualifies. It shows imagination, skill, and versatility- the qualities that make an artist great. So while there will always be those of limited imagination who “don’t get it,” i think you reached your real audience. This is a staggering act of creativity, and i’m grateful that you chose to share it with the world. Yes, it’s silly. Yes, it’s not a thing you can use to fix a car. But that’s the beauty of it: It IS silly, and joyful, and fun. This looks like it was glorious fun to do. (By the way, try red koolaid powder for blood.)

Thank you for sharing it, and please share pictures of your future projects- maybe even make a video. I promise you that there will always be those who understand what makes it joyful. And we will be grateful that you chose to share.

Thanks for all the overwhelmingly nice and funny comments and kudos and nerd-props. Though I’m telling my girlfriend that people assume she’s fat and has braces, she may take umbrage at that. Hehe.

Also, yeh, I know, its not the most accurate description, but we were working from our slightly drunk and very faded memories of the movies and books. Special note: Vodka and candy only works for like two minutes before it becomes fucking disgusting.

So again thanks, and like I said, we’re already planning next year’s model, so I’ll be geeking out all year.

I think we’re operating at like a 90% positive comment rate which in Interweb terms is epic. I mean, it’s candy, how can you not like candy?

Though somewhere someone did tell me I should have sent this to the Sudan as a giant fuck you from the decadent West, which I thought was nice and original *sigh*.

I made another post with some more details, though for those unable to find it amongst the tunnels, most of the candy was eaten by children on New Year’s day, and then the structure burned, burned to the sweetest crisp you’ve ever dreamed of.

My grandmother and father helped take the jolly ranchers and starbursts out of their packaging, oh and they separated the nerds (ha, nerds) into separate colors.

My parents cats also walked on some parts of it, which was kind of gross, but the cat prints in the icing were pretty hilarious.

And any fool that charged as Gandalf did would be dead. Charging horses vs pikes means dead horses, that is what pikes are for. But you are not at fault for the movies flaws. But please read the book some time.

  168. First, to the creator: this is some seriously awesome shit, dude. I only wish I had that kind of free time over the holidays! Your next project should be to make mashed-potato snowmen in the style of Transmetropolitan (or Calvin & Hobbes, if you want to keep it PG). Also, my apologies in advance for the rant to follow… because if there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s people who judge others before they know the Truth about who they really are. So…

Second, to all the detractors: Just because all you see on this website is someone with a great imagination and a passion for Lord of the Rings does *not* mean that it’s all he is. If you knew *me,* you’d know that I’ve got several (simultaneous) hot girlfriends, have great sex on a regular basis, work out all the time, and have a ridiculously overactive social life. But I also read philosophy, play drums, do my own home repairs, visit my family on a regular basis, and write short works of fantasy fiction. Don’t judge a person based on a single snapshot of their life – free your mind and try to accept others with kindness before Karma comes up and kicks your ass.

  187. Idea: A-
    Execution: D
    Aesthetics: D-

You had a cute idea. Unfortuantely, in all honesty, this thing is hideous–it is like something a ten year old would do as a school project. The icing (if it is even a proper royal) is all over the place and looks like it was slapped on by walrus flipper. The actual structure is haphazard at best. I could look at it and say something nice…some bread & butter compliment as if you were a little kid, but that would not serve the truth. On the bright side, at least by now you have probably learned about what does/does not work before attempting something like this again and at least, if nothing else, you had a little fun. The world needs more of that sort of just-jump-in-and-try kind of person. If you google “gingerbread house” you will come up with a TON of ideas about how to improve your technique. I look forward to seeing more.

My thinking is that they were the “trendy boys” in school and thought real life would dump luxury in their laps only to be cruelly reminded how all those hours of creating a cool dude image instead of being themselves didn’t get them very far in the real world.
So now as they struggle to figure out how to power on their parent’s computers late at night to go in search of the only “hot girl” that will have anything to do with them (aka intraweb porn) they lash out angrily at the geeks, reminded daily that they weren’t brave enough to be geeks because that would mean being true to YOURSELF and not everyone else.

At least they do get a discount on food at their fast food futures.

I find the angrier the comments from the trolls are the lower the IQs must be. (The only way to explain the spelling or lack thereof)

For example my favorite remains the illustrious Tod:

“um….. i put patch panels in a trunk of a chevelle. your a loser. just responding to your question as to what i did over break.”

Wow…that just speaks volumes about Tod’s life doesn’t it? Not only was did he have his head up something he actually admitted to having so little of a life that he took the time to attempt an insult instead of being productive!

    Well done Tod! Priorities dude!

I read EVERY SINGLE ONE of the comments above and have this to say: Most posters are normal, ordinary people who are pleasantly surprised and totally impressed by your project; some however, feel the need to detract – why, I ask? Then the answer appears to me – because making negative comments with bad spelling, grammar and punctuation makes them feel better about their tiny, empty little lives.

There are some red licorice ropes as rope.
